Workshop #1 - Practice Nighttime Photography Skills

Practice your nighttime photography skills in a crime scene-propped environment.    Most of our crime scenes don’t happen in controlled lighting conditions.  It’s important to understand how your camera can capture the scene regardless of your access to superior lighting stands and without waiting for daylight.  Practice your nighttime skills by using a tripod, slowing your shutter speed, adjusting your ISO, “painting with light,” and more! It’s FREE and designed to be FUN and informative.

Workshop #2 - Features and Functions of the Nikon z5 Mirrorless

Just got the New mirrorless camera???   Learn how to use all of its features.   Understand its limitations.  See what tips and tricks you can use to set your camera for easy-to-access functions at the crime scene.

Workshop #3 - Advancements in Technology for Latent Examiners and Crime Scene Investigators

Advancements in Technology for Latent Examiners and Crime Scene Investigators. As forensic technology continues to advance, it is essential for professionals in the field to remain current with tools that can enhance evidence detection and examination. This hands-on workshop is specifically tailored for crime scene investigators and latent print examiners who want to deepen their understanding of emerging technologies used in the field and laboratory. Participants will explore how alternate light sources (ALS), lasers, and reflective ultraviolet imaging systems (RUVIS) can be used to improve the detection and documentation of latent prints and trace evidence. Topics include the science of fluorescence in forensics, differences between Class 4 lasers, ALS, and LED systems, the unique benefits of shortwave UV, and the operational principles of RUVIS. The workshop emphasizes practical application through direct, guided interaction with cutting-edge equipment. Attendees will engage in hands-on activities examining various types of evidence using advanced ALS, laser, and RUVIS tools. By the end of the session, participants will have a deeper understanding of how these technologies can enhance both field and lab investigations.

Workshop #4 - Crime Scene Processing Techniques

Crime Scene Processing Techniques. This course is designed for both new crime scene investigators and seasoned investigators seeking a refresher. Participants will learn to effectively identify, document, collect, and preserve physical evidence from a crime scene to ensure its admissibility in court. Key techniques will include the use traditional powders, chemical processes to develop latent impressions, the use of ALS, and documentation and collection of shoe/tire impressions.

    Workshop #5 - Courtroom Testimony

Courtroom Testimony, It’s Time to Take Control! Courtroom testimony is a critical role that law enforcement professionals play in the Criminal Justice System. It’s our chance to explain to the trier of fact our observations, actions, and opinions in the criminal cases we all work so hard on. It really is where the “rubber meets the road”. Yet most law enforcement professionals get little to no training in this extremely important component of our jobs. This course will inform on the various courtroom proceedings, discuss the unease we all experience sitting in the witness stand, jurors’ expectations of law enforcement witnesses, how to prepare for testimony, and how to take control and develop confidence every time you step into the courtroom.

    Workshop #6 - Murder Mystery

Crime scenes hold hidden truths, but with the right tools and techniques, even the most concealed evidence can be brought to light. This workshop begins with an in-depth exploration of advanced evidence detection methods using ultraviolet (UV), visible, and infrared (IR) light. Attendees will learn practical approaches for visualizing biological fluids, latent fingerprints, gunshot residue, blood, and trace evidence, even on challenging surfaces. Participants will then transition into a collaborative, scenario-based challenge: working together to process mock evidence, interpret findings, and reconstruct the events leading to a homicide. The objective: identify the perpetrator before time runs out. Designed to be both educational and engaging for forensic professionals, this session blends hands-on application with real-world complexity in a fun, fast-paced environment.

Workshop #7 - Using the Nikon z5 Crime Scene & Evidence Practical

As a follow-up to Workshop #2 or for those crime scene professionals already familiar with the features of the Nikon z5, this workshop will focus on practical scenarios that need to be photographed.  Prepare to use your tripod, macro lenses, and lighting alternatives to photograph evidence at the crime scene.

Workshop #8 Combining iOS LiDAR with High Accuracy GNSS for Rapid Documentation of Large Outdoor Scenes

Learn about a new, powerful workflow for rapidly and accurately documenting large outdoor crime and crash scenes in detailed color 3D. This workshop will demonstrate how to easily combine the speed and convenience of iOS LiDAR with the high accuracy and global positioning of external GNSS/RTK devices, using DotProduct's Dot3D application. Participants will learn how to leverage this new process to create highly accurate, geo-referenced 3D point clouds in minutes. The hands-on session will include live scanning and workflow testing, with each participant also receiving a complimentary month of Dot3D Prime to further explore these workflows from personal iOS Pro devices.

FYI - This workshop would include a hands-on outdoor 3D scanning component, outside of any severe weather restrictions.

Workshop #9 - Macro Evidence Photography and Focus Stacking

This workshop provides a comprehensive look into the principles and best practices of evidence photography, with an emphasis on macro techniques, including camera settings, macro-options, working distance, camera supports, lighting, and focus stacking.

Using a small aperture alone ignores the lens's sharpest aperture or “sweet spot” and causes diffraction. Images can be captured at different focal planes (focus bracketing) and then combined and blended into a single composite image (focus stacking). This workshop will demonstrate the concepts of leveraging photographic equipment and post-processing with software to obtain the otherwise impossible depth of field images for crime scenes and forensic evidence.

    Required equipment:

    •        DSLR or mirrorless camera

    •        Macro lens or some close-up device

    •        Tripod or camera support

    •        Remote shutter release (if available)

    •        A computer (Windows or Mac) running a copy of Helicon Focus (full or free trial)

Focusing rails, macro lenses, and macro bellows will be available for use during the workshop (both Canon and Nikon)

    Workshop #10 - Shooting Reconstruction

This course will show law enforcement and forensic professionals how to scientifically analyze physical evidence to determine the sequence of events in a shooting incident. We’ll cover firearm mechanics, ballistics, bullet and projectile analysis on various surfaces, proper documentation, and the mathematical and scientific principles needed to reconstruct the events.  We’ll use practical exercises, mock scenes, and case studies.
